Young Vocal Leaders Programme

A brand new pilot project which aims to get young people all across Thurrock singing.

Who is it for? Anyone aged 13-25 who lives, works or studies in Thurrock, is interested in exploring opera and other musical genres, and wants to develop their skills as a singers and vocal leader. Limited places available – selected through application and audition process.

Young people accepted onto the vocal leaders programme will undertake seven days of training over six months, which will give them all the skills and experience they need to lead singing with their peers. Their ideas and voices will be at the heart of the project, shaping it as the project develops.

During the training days, young vocal leaders will explore different genres through the medium of the music and stories of opera. They will develop skills in conducting, arranging and composing as well as developing their own vocal technique as individuals, and as a group which will perform at ROH Thurrock events. These leaders will become ambassadors for singing across Thurrock and beyond. They will go back into their schools, colleges, youth clubs, community centres or workplaces and will start singing groups with their peers – this can be anything from a small trio or ensemble to rehearsing and conducting a school choir, or even the whole school! It’s all up to the young vocal leader to decide how they use their training, with the support of the Royal Opera House.

The Royal Opera House’s rich and diverse music and drama will be the inspiration for the vocal leader course, and the participants will use this as a jump-off point to explore many different musical and performance styles. The only limit is their own imagination!

Young people can work in pairs or alone, and will need the support of a teacher or other adult. They will prepare a group of peers for a performance at a Royal Opera House Big Sing day in March.

How can I get involved?

Anyone who would like to apply to be a young vocal leader should complete an application form, along with a parent / carer.

Application forms will ask young people for some information about their musical experience, why they want to take part in the young vocal leader programme, and their initial ideas for which singers they would work with back in school / the community.

Applicants should also nominate a supporting adult (e.g. a teacher or youth worker) who will be able to work with the young leader in their school or community setting to help them run vocal activities. The supporting adult should complete a section of the form to endorse the young person’s application.
