Orchestra:An orchestra is a group of musicians who play a variety of different instruments together normally led by a conductor. How this ensemble of musicians is labelled depends somewhat on its size, makeup and function. examples would be: symphony/philharmonic orchestra, chamber orchestra, theatre orchestra, string orchestra.

Is it an orchestra or band?

Generally speaking an orchestra is a more traditional term for a varied grouping of musicians and plays 'classical' style music although this can include any style of music including 'jazz' & 'pop' etc. A band is a loose term which can mean anything from a one man band or any number of musicians up to large wind bands and marching bands.

 

Want to play in an orchestra or band?

The first place to check this out is your music teacher at school. Your school may have their own orchestra or band! If not, your teacher will know of community orchestras and ensembles you could play in. Of course Thurrock Music Services run various ensembles and orchestral courses that are free to those already studying music with us.
